Weather conditions for Jersey, Channel Islands.

The wise monkey grabs data about the local weather conditions from various sources and shows the most recent information on a map of the island. It's focus is on kiteboarding and paragliding and by default these spots will be highlighted and rated when the conditions are good for them. This can be turned off in the options area.

Here is a description of the various controls:

The view automatically refreshes every minute. Wind information is shown in the center of the map, swell at the bottom left and tides are top-right.

Data

Where the information comes from and how often it is updated:

Area Source Update frequency
Wind observation Jersey airport On a good day every 6 minutes but this source is unreliable. When it fails a sturdier option kicks in but it only updates every 30 mins.
Swell observation From the wave buoy 5nm off of Corbiere Hourly
Tides National Oceanography Center Daily
Air temp Jersey airport At least every 30 minutes
Sea temp St. Helier Harbour Daily
Forecast in the future zone Windguru provides all data apart from tides 3 times a day

Please don't blame the monkey if you drop everything and rush to a site only to find that the conditions are not as stated! Wind readings especially are only an indication of the conditions at the airport and the actual wind at a beach on the other side of the island may be quite different. Generally the wind is lower at the beach and higher on steep slopes and this is considered when ratings are given.
